Caron Cakes Overview
I thought I'd do my second review on original Caron Cakes that were released. These were (and kind of still are) my go to cakes. I especially liked these before I was comfortable in changing yarn colors. They had colors I wouldn't have thought to put together and complimented each other nicely.
Caron Cakes Yarn Details
These cakes are sold exclusively at Michaels. They have since came out for a full line of different cakes, but the original cakes are described as:

Let's Compare
Price:
Not factoring in any coupons or sales, the cost of the yarn is roughly $0.02 a yard. Michaels does tend to have a 20% off a non-sale priced item. Meaning you could get this for $6.39 dropping it down to $0.016 a yard.
Feel:
Picking up the yarn in the store felt super soft and squishy. I love squishy yarn. It's fairly light on your hand as it moves through. There were times where it felt a bit scratchier than others, but overall nothing bad. Since this does contain wool I was expecting it to be scratchy and I was pleasantly surprised when I did find this. However if you do have an allergy or sensitivity to wool, you may have a different experience.
Color Options:
Currently there are 15 color ways on the Michaels website. You will find that each season brings in limited colorways for that season. This will in turn affect the amount of color ways available. Those seasonal colorways also tend to be a few dollars more than the standard colors available. The color runs are long however color changes are abrupt. So depending on the size of your project will determine the look of the project. If you like to determine where the color changes will happen in a project, this yarn probably isn't for you. Unless you are awesome at planning color changes, which I am not, you're going to have a sudden color change in the most inconvenient spot.
Another item to note about the color is that the lengths of the colors aren't all the same. Meaning Color A could be longer or shorter than Color B.
Final Thoughts
I do still love this yarn. I've gotten used to the sudden color changes and when the project is completed, they aren't always as noticeable as you think. One note, the first color in the center is rarely the full color length of this color later, so typically the first row you either need to cut off this color and use later or know that your starting chain /row will have a different color length to it.
Though with becoming more comfortable with changing my yarn, I've gone more of the route of doing the changes myself. Though this does mean more yarn tails to weave in when done vs. using one of these cakes.
I've washed on gentle and lowest heat setting in the dryer with no issues, but that is something you'll want to think about for your project and if you are comfortable doing this for your project(s).

I do still pick these up when i find them on sale as people tend to love the projects using this yarn.
